The returning trends of Doc Martens, choker necklaces, oversized flannels and crop tops have us wondering what decade it is — but fashion isn’t the only area that ’90s grunge is making a comeback.
Grunge is experiencing a resurgence in music as well, but not in the way you might think. For a male-dominated genre known as the “Seattle Sound,” you wouldn’t expect a female-fronted British band to take on grunge’s revival. Enter Wolf Alice.
While still relatively unknown, Wolf Alice already has a 2016 Grammy nomination to their name for Best Rock Performance with their single “Moaning Lisa Smile.” The track begins in textbook grunge style with a heavy solo guitar before the kick drum and cymbals come crashing in synchronization.
“Moaning Lisa Smile” may have been their first single to chart, but my personal favorite is “You’re A Germ” from their debut album “My Love Is Cool.” The track seethes with the teenage angst I never got to embrace because I was too busy being a bookworm before tapping into my inner music slut.
At the conclusion of the song, lead singer Ellie Rowsell growls “Where’s mom and dad so you can tell them / You’re a guilty fucker as well” before closing with a maniacal laugh. Rock n’ roll man.
